SEPTEMBER 4, 1862:
Robert E.
Lee takes the 55,000-man Army of Northern Virginia across the Potomac River
into Maryland in his first invasion of the North. Lee plans to resupply his
army outside of war-torn Virginia and to damage Northern morale in anticipation
of the November elections, possibly forcing a peace. This invasion will climax
at Antietam.
