SEPTEMBER 5, 1862:
General
John Pope U.S.A. is relieved of command of the Army of Virginia. General Joseph
“Fighting Joe” Hooker replaces him, but only in order to disband the Army of
Virginia. Pope is ordered (by McClellan) to report to McClellan for orders.
General Halleck orders Pope to take orders only from Secretary of War Edwin
Stanton. With the enemy on Union soil, the chaos in the upper command bodes
ill.
