SEPTEMBER 1, 1862:
The Battle of Chantilly, Virginia (The
Battle of Ox Hill). The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia attempted to cut
off the line of retreat of the Union Army of Virginia but was attacked by two
Union divisions.
Although the Union Divisions were defeated, the battle was a successful
delaying action in that the Union attack halted the Confederate advance. The Union
defeat led directly to the disbandment of the Union Army of Virginia, the units
of which were absorbed by the Army of the Potomac.
