September 7, 1862---"Aimless hostility"

SEPTEMBER 7, 1862:

As the Army of Northern Virginia marches through Frederick, the Army of the Potomac enters Maryland, and George B. McClellan establishes his Headquarters at Rockville, 30 miles from Lee. But seemingly having no idea where Lee was (though everybody else knew), McClellan has reconnaissance squads riding all over central Maryland hunting for traces of Lee’s army. Jefferson Davis justifies the invasion to Marylanders by describing McClellan as “an enemy, who pursues us with a relentless and, apparently aimless hostility."
