JULY 1, 1865:
The Upper Peninsula Iron Miners’ Strike:
The
end of the Civil War has brought a sharp decrease in the demand for iron and a
large increase in the available labor pool. As a result, the iron mining
companies of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula announce a severe wage cut for both the
iron miners and the dockworkers who handle the ore. This brings on a violent
strike, which is broken when the gunboat U.S.S. MICHIGAN opens fire on the
protesting workers.
