MAY 30, 1865:
The Confederate Legislature of
Mississippi meets, votes that the State shall hold a Convention in order to
expedite its return to the Union, and then votes to dissolve itself. This
becomes the pattern for all State Reconstructions under President Johnson’s new
plan. All ex-Confederates who have taken the Oath of Allegiance to the United
States may, and do, participate in the various State Conventions.
