MAY 28, 1865:
Far from the usual cruising grounds of
Confederate commerce raiders, the skipper of the C.S.S. SHENANDOAH has no idea
that the Civil War is at its end. The commerce raider thus remains on war patrol
in the Russian Sea of Okhotsk. Today she finds and burns the bark ABIGAIL, out
of New Bedford, Massachusetts, in a dense fog. Although the late Spring is
prime whaling season in the vast and icy Sea of Okhotsk, the fog is so thick
that sailors cannot see from the main to the fore, and most whaling ships have
sought safer waters for the time being. The ABIGAIL is unluckily fog-bound and
is discovered only when SHENANDOAH nearly rams her.
