October 22, 1863---"We Are Coming Father Abraham, 300,000 More."

OCTOBER 22, 1863:

In response to the enthusiastic public response to President Abraham Lincoln’s call earlier this week for “300,000 more” Union troops, Confederate President Jefferson Davis likewise calls upon his citizenry to “. . . volunteer for a week, a month, or six months, as they might feel disposed, in order that the Confederate cause might yet triumph.” It is hard for Confederate men to ignore Davis' thoughtless use of the word might, and Davis' call inspires no singing.
