October 21, 1863---"Hope deferred maketh the heart sick."

OCTOBER 21, 1863:

Confederate Joseph Waddell confides to his diary:

“No news from the various armies to-day . . . —Pennsylvania and Ohio elections have gone in favor of the Lincoln candidates . . .  No hope for us in any "conservative sentiment" at the North. To end the war some influence must come from abroad — but where is it to come from? Possibly France — but "Hope deferred maketh the heart sick.”
