JULY
24, 1865:
During a meeting between
top Administration officials and the French Ambassador concerning the
Confederate migration south of the border, General Ulysses S. Grant advises him
that “France must leave Mexico.”
Even
as Grant is saying this, U.S. troops are being dispatched in large numbers to
the Mexican border under orders to aid the pro-democracy insurgents in Mexico.
The concentration of troops along the border also helps to stabilize south
Texas politically, and significantly reduces the number of Confederates seeking
asylum in Mexico and Latin America via the overland route.
