APRIL 19, 1862:
The
Battle of South Mills, North Carolina. To neutralize the threat of Confederate
ironclads presumptively readying at Norfolk, the Union mounted an expedition to
destroy the Dismal Swamp Canal locks to prevent transfer of the ships to
Albemarle Sound. After a brief skirmish, both sides withdrew; the locks
remained operative. Bizarrely, the Union Commander claimed a victory.
