December 1, 1864---The Robe Dress

DECEMBER 1, 1864:

In the midst of increasingly cold and inclement weather, General John Schofield U.S.A.’s forces join General George H. Thomas’ forces in Nashville.

Godey’s Lady’s Book introduces the “robe dress” for Christmas, and announces that as of January 1865, its annual subscription price will rise from three dollars to four dollars. Wartime inflation is blamed for the increase.
