December 6, 1863---The loss of the USS WEEHAWKEN
DECEMBER 6, 1863:
The
U.S.S. WEEHAWKEN sinks with all hands in Charleston Harbor when the weight of
her magazine submerges the ship’s scuppers and hawsepipes, causing the ship to
founder.
