OCTOBER 1, 1863:
Under pressure from Richmond, General Braxton Bragg C.S.A. orders an offensive against the Union-held city of Chattanooga. General Joseph Wheeler, C.S.A. begins an extensive ten
day cavalry raid near Chattanooga, the purpose of which is to cut the Union
rail lines into the area. Taking Union forces by surprise, Wheeler’s men do
significant initial damage.
