AUGUST 24, 1863:              

Southern morale continues to deteriorate in the wake of the Union’s July victories at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Tullahoma, as seen in this diary entry:

“Our army under General Lee continues to retreat into Virginia but the Yankees are not pressing the action. We hear that down south that the Yankees are converging on eastern Tennessee and Confederate reinforcements will be needed. Lee is sending two divisions under General Longstreet down to that area. We will be taking a train and hope to be there in a few days to join General Braxton Bragg. No matter where we go the North always seems to have more soldiers.”
