January 3, 1862---Three battles

JANUARY 3, 1862:              

 The Battle of Shipping Point:  Union gunboats exchange fire with Confederate shore batteries at Cockpit Point, Freestone Point, and Shipping Point along the Potomac River. The Union did not dislodge the Confederate batteries; the Confederates did not drive away the Union gunboats.
