January 21, 1862---Unionist refugees seek shelter

JANUARY 21, 1862:

Large numbers of recent German and other unnaturalized U.S. immigrants now living in the C.S.A. continue to flood Norfolk, Virginia. An immigrant refugee camp developed there as a result of Jefferson Davis’ Executive Order that all “alien enemies” leave the Confederacy. Said one Confederate derisively, “They believe that if they can’t get to the United States the United States will come to them. I think differently, but I may be mistaken.”  He was.  Some 200,000 white Unionist refugees fled north during the Civil War.
