January 20, 1862---"A cheesebox on a raft"



JANUARY 20, 1862:           

 The Union’s newest ironclad is named MONITOR since it will act as a guard against Confederate aggression.  “Monitor” also became the name of this new class of warship---the last original one of which, the U.S.S. WYOMING, was retired in 1937!
