October 25, 1863---The Quartermaster-General of the United States makes his report



OCTOBER 25, 1863:             

The Union's Quartermaster-General, General Montgomery C. Meigs, visits Chattanooga to report that the Union has built pontoon bridges across the Tennessee River, and that although Confederate shelling is generally ineffectual, “[t]he rebel guns on Lookout Mountain, however, command the channel at its base.”
