January 2, 1862---Snow doesn't slow Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign

JANUARY 2, 1862:

The Valley Campaign begins:

Stonewall Jackson’s troops, struggling through ice covered roads and drifting snow, are surprised when the general turns the column north, away from the direct route to Romney, (now West) Virginia, the site of their planned attack. Jackson intends to attack the town of Bath, Virginia (current day Berkeley Springs, West Virginia), in order to clear Union troops from his flank before driving on to Romney.
