November 8, 1862---Beast Butler Bans Breweries



NOVEMBER 8, 1862:         

Benjamin Franklin “Beast” Butler is relieved of command as Military Governor of New Orleans after repeated complaints about his attitude toward civilians reach the ears of Washington. In a parting act of petty vindictiveness, Butler closes all the breweries, distilleries, and taverns in the city.
