APRIL 21, 1861:          

“The Pawnee War”: Citizens of Richmond, Virginia react en masse to the rumor that the U.S.S. PAWNEE will be arriving at wharfside to attack the city. Richmonders take up arms---guns, shovels, scythes, swords and sword canes, and piles of rocks---to repel the “invasion”---which never came.
