1860---South Carolina demands Fort Sumter



DECEMBER 31, 1860:    

  President Buchanan announces to the South Carolinians that Congress must define the relations between the Federal government and South Carolina, and that he will not withdraw the troops from Charleston. R.W. Barnwell, a signatory of the Ordinance of Secession, begins to pen a response to Buchanan.
