Early 1861---Delaware rejects secession

JANUARY 3, 1861:

Delaware rejects secession. Although a Slave State, the large majority of Delaware’s blacks were freedmen. Less than 2,000 slaves lived in Delaware in 1861, mostly in southern Sussex County, and Unionist sentiment was strong. Unlike some Border States, Delaware never maintained rival Federal and Confederate governments.
