Early 1861---Texas' great shame: Sam Houston is deposed

MARCH 18, 1861:

The famed Unionist Governor of Texas, Sam Houston, is deposed and sent into internal exile. As he departs, Houston tells the Confederates:

“You may, after the sacrifice of countless millions of treasures and hundreds of thousands of precious lives, as a bare possibility, win Southern independence...but I doubt it."

On the same day, Arkansas rejects secession.
