Late 1859---John Brown is hanged

DECEMBER 2, 1859:

John Brown is hanged in Charles Town, Virginia (now Charlestown, West Virginia). Brown becomes a martyr to the North. He alarms the South as an example of a fanatical Yankee abolitionist trying to start a bloody race war. After his hanging, secession sentiment grows in the South.
