1776-1820 --- Adoption of the Declaration of Independence

July 2, 1776:   


Meeting in Philadelphia, the Second Continental Congress adopts a resolution to declare the thirteen colonies as independent united States, free from British Suzerainty. John Adams, who led the push for a declaration of independence, writes to his wife Abigail, saying, "The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America."
