AUGUST 5, 1861:
The
Battle of Athens. Union troops and Confederate irregulars clash outside of
Athens, Missouri, in the northern part of the State. Union losses are three
killed and 18 wounded. Confederate losses exceed fifty. The Rebels are driven
back from Athens.
