AUGUST 27, 1861:
The
capture of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Eight Union warships and 800 troops
launch an amphibious landing against Fort Clark and Fort Hatteras, on the
Hatteras Inlet. A sustained naval bombardment by Union ships destroys the
forts.
