March 3, 1863---The U.S. Military Draft Act becomes law



MARCH 3, 1863:         

The U.S. Congress passes the Civil War Military Draft Act, requiring the enrollment of every male citizen and immigrant between ages twenty and forty-five. The wealthy could buy their way out for $300.00 and pay substitutes to take their place in the ranks.
