December 3, 1862---Union troops move on Rebel positions

DECEMBER 3, 1862:

General James Blunt, the Union Commander near Cane Hill, Arkansas receives word that 25,000 Rebels are planning to attack his position; however, unbeknownst to him, there are only 11,000 in the area, no more than at the Battle of Cane Hill. Believing he is outnumbered 5-to-1, Blunt behaves unlike General George B. McClellan: He orders his men to go on the offensive.
