MAY 25, 1865:
A huge explosion occurs at the Mobile,
Alabama Armory, in which the entire magazine detonates. The force of the
explosion is so great that buildings topple off their foundations. Downtown
Mobile is destroyed in what becomes a uncontrollable conflagration. Exploding
ordnance makes fighting the fire an impossibility for several days. Sabotage is
suspected but never proven.
