February 5, 1865---"Deep, latent sadness."

FEBRUARY 5, 1865:

President Lincoln sits for a famous portrait photograph by Alexander Gardner. It is, until recently, thought to be the last photograph ever taken of Lincoln. Walt Whitman’s subsequent description of Lincoln’s “deep latent sadness” is matched by the President’s careworn and haggard appearance, making him look far older than his fifty five years.  The Civil War has etched itself upon his soul.
