DECEMBER 14, 1864:
General Grant sends a message to General George
H. Thomas in Nashville, demanding to know why he has not yet moved against
General John Bell Hood C.S.A. Thomas’ lukewarm response, that the attack will
commence on the morrow, troubles Grant enough so that he dispatches a
replacement commander to take over operations if Thomas has not moved by the 15th.
Thinking twice, he also sets out for Tennessee in person.
