July 8, 1863---The Confederacy is vivisected



JULY 8, 1863:   

Port Hudson, Louisiana surrenders to the Union. With the surrender of Port Hudson, the last tentative link between the two halves of the Confederacy, east and west, is broken permanently. The Trans-Mississippi is now isolated from the rest of the Southland.
