During the course of the Civil War, the borders controlled by the Union and the Confederacy rolled back and forth across Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia like a monstrous wave of human blood, but ultimately every year, the Confederacy lost ground and, more importantly, lost support in the Border States which grew more Unionist as the months passed.
